typeaheadtoggle

Update, 2009.07.04: added Firefox 3.5 compatibility.

I love the typeaheadfind feature in Firefox, which invokes the Find command on a page automatically when you start typing. There are a couple of sites, however — Big Picture, I’m looking at you, mostly — that use some kind of keyboard navigation for their content, and typeaheadfind disrupts this.

It’s kind of a pain to go to about:config and change that setting every time I want to read Big Picture and use their navigation. I searched around for a Firefox extension that would add a simple toolbar button to enable or disable typeaheadfind with one click, but I couldn’t find one, so I just used this really handy Extension Wizard (thanks, Ted; that’s a really cool thing you made) to get started and a few minutes later I had created typeaheadtoggle.

Download typeaheadtoggle right here.

Download it to your desktop, then install it by dragging it onto Firefox’s “Add-Ons” window. (Yes, I know there’s a script I can set up that would let this auto-install, but I don’t expect much demand for this so it doesn’t seem worth the trouble.) After installing and restarting the browser, you’ll have to right click the toolbar, select “Customize,” and drag it to your preferred spot on the toolbar.
