The quietly brilliant, usually overlooked career of Chris Whitley continues with two new releases, one an album of new material and one a collection of songs from his first three albums treated to the stripped-down approach he took on his Dirt Floor record. Highly recommended.

folks before you had this to say:

  1. Rob

First time Whitley checker-outers are probably most likely to dig _Dirt Floor_ or his deubt, _Living With the Law_. If you like those, check out his excursion albums: _Din of Ecstasy_ is the loud, distorted, Crazy Horse style record, and _Rocket House_ mixes in a lot of sampling and weird electronic effects.

Thanks for the other tips. Everyone I know seems to be crazy about the Decemberists. Their stock is rising fast…

  2. Spider Boogie

Which Chris Whitley album would you recommend to a newbie?

You know how hard it is to forecast musical enjoyment for another person…but,
I would like to recommend a new, low-key fav.

Iron and Wine – Our Endless Numbered Days

What the hell, since I’m here:

Rock album: The Walkmen – Bows and Arrows

Sonic Guitar, Boom & Groove: Interpol – Turn on the Bright Lights

Any of these will not disappoint. It’s all about the mood.

Oh, and The Decembrists are damn fine, too.

“I have bubbles in my tummy. Not stink. Promise.”

    – Jessica Simpson

Sorry about the J.S. quote, I just couldn’t pass it up!

  3. Molly

Reiter In, Chris’ last record is coming out this month. I payed a lot for an import, but you can hear some of it on http://www.redparlor.com It’s amazing, definitely one of his best. It’s too bad it will be his last record, but at least Chris was able to accomplish a lot while he was here.

got something to say about that?
