My bowling team met its fund-raising goal and won the bet we’d made with The Ball Busters, another team from around the office. I rolled a 113 the first game and a 115 the second — pretty consistent, right? Thanks again to those of you who donated!
The amazing TrekPod is on sale now — everybody go buy ten of these things immediately. It’s a combination hiking staff and tripod, plus it’s got a really cool magentic-mounting system to make it even easier to use than your crappy old tripod. You need one and must buy one right now…

Our beautiful daughter, Violet Anne Lifford, arrived on Monday, 31 January 2005, at 5:26 p.m. central time, weighing in at 7 pounds, 13.4 ounces. Absolutely nothing could have prepared us for the overwhelming surge of joy and love at the moment she came into the world. The first batch of pictures is on my Yahoo! Photos site.
Mom and baby are both in good health — Violet stayed the first two nights in the NICU for some antibiotics and observation since mommy was running a slight fever during labor, but the doctors assured us that it was pretty much just a formality. She was allowed to come stay with us in Cheris’ postpartum room on Wednesday morning and then come home with us that same evening. The labor got started on Saturday night, but that’s a long story for another time…
The winner of the guessing contest is REBA, one of our beloved friends and co-conspirator in the quilt project! She was the only one of five people guessing the correct date to predict that we’d have a girl. Honorable mentions to the other four who nailed the birthdate:
- my Hoover’s colleague Jon, who also got the weight within six tenths of an ounce!
- another erstwhile colleague, Darryl, who not only had the right date and it’s his birthday too
- my buddy Brent, who just plain kicks ass
- Brian Ross, who I’ve never even laid eyes upon but have become acquainted with through the magic of this crazy Inter-web
With that, if you’ll excuse me, I must go bask in Violet’s loveliness. Now.
UPDATE: after some basking, just uploaded some more photos that Cheris’ mom took at the hospital and back here at the house today.
Hey, I know everyone’s all tapped out on charity after making their tsunami relief contributions, but if you can spare an extra buck or two, please consider supporting my team in a bowl-a-thon for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I’ll be participating in this event on 25 February with some great co-workers. There’s a secure online pledge-by-credit-card option, so it’s pretty painless, and I don’t think there’s any minimum donation. Your help would be very much appreciated.
Well, I’ve redesigned again; it had been a while. The goal was just to make everything cleaner and simpler. For instance, I’ve removed links to the Korean sites from the main nav since nobody was clicking on them (though those pages still see surprising traffic coming in from Google).
I’ve finally added an about page and a contact form, two things that had been sorely lacking for some time. Thought those would be especially necessary now that I’m drawing some extra traffic since Bunker — who just keeps building more and more sites! — added me to his Texas Bloggers homepage.
That’s all I’ll say about it for now, though, because I’d rather not detract attention from more important stuff (namely, the previous post). Your comments on the redesign are welcome, of course, and let me know if you find broken links or display issues.

Holy smokes, check out the amazing quilt our friends made for the baby! Leah, Reba, Leti, Shannon, Merritt, Melissa & Taylor, Chris & Kristen, Eric & Jessi, Dave & Michele, John & Kristie: you people are the greatest. Cheris literally cried with joy when she saw their beautiful work (which I must confess I knew a little something about in advance, heh heh heh)… more pictures and perhaps video to be posted here soon.
And here’s the mommy just three days before the doc’s official due date… Looking about ready to deliver, yes?
I allowed a couple late entries into the baby-guessing contest because I’m just such a nice guy. I’m too lazy to post the Excel file I made of the entries, but the final stats look like this:
- 22 guesses for a boy, 17 guesses for a girl (that includes one of each from my former boss Linda, who’s guessing twins against all odds!)
- Average weight: 7 pounds, 9 ounces
- 15 guesses before the due date, 2 guesses on the due date, 21 guesses after the due date
Now we just wait and see… easier said than done.
